The Grand National horse race.
I was listening to the radio the other night when they began to talk about The Grand National. So I thought my first post on aprender ingles blog would be this;
I have been living in Spain for nine years now and one of the things that I miss, is the running of the Aintree Grand National horse race.
Every year on a Saturday near the beginning of April, at 4
o´clock in the afternoon, we´d sit in front of the telly and watch the race live on bbc tv, waiting with great anticipation as to what was going to happen – to find out where your horse would finish in the race.
Many a time my horse would fall or be brought down when jumping the first few fences. All great fun!
The Grand National horse race is held at the Aintree racecourse near Liverpool UK. This is a very famous horse racing event held every year. The very first race was held in 1839.
The course is nearly 2 and a quarter miles long. It has sixteen fences in total. Several of the fences have names given to them, for example, Bechar’s Brook which is fence number six, the Chair fence number fifteen and St Valentine’s Brook which is fence number nine.
Two circuits of the course are run, jumping 30 fences in total. Two of the fences are only jumped once on the first circuit, which are The Water Fence and The Chair. After the last fence there is a run in of 494 yards, which often decides the winner of the race because the horses and jockeys are so tired they struggle to reach the finishing post.
There can be up forty horses running in the race, this can cause spectacular accidents, with the fences being so high and wide this causes a lot of horses to fall when jumping over them. When there is a “faller” it may take another two or three horses down with it. There have been many accidents over the years with horses being killed or having to be put down because they are so badly injured.
The first horse to win the race was called Lottery. The most famous horse to win the Grand National was called Redrum winning the race three times in 1973, 1974 and 1977. There is now a statue dedicated to Redrum at the Aintree racecourse.

La otra noche estaba escuchando la radio cuando empezaron a hablar de “The Grand National”. Así pensé que mi primer “post” en el blog de aprenderinglesblog.com sería este;
Hace nueve años que vivo en España y una de las cosas que echo de menos de Inglaterra es ver el Aintree Grand National – carrera de caballos.
Todos los años al principío de Abril un sábado a las cuatro de la tarde nos sentábamos en frente del telé y veíamos la carrera en el canal de tv de la bbc, esperando ver que ocuriríar, ver dónde terminaría nuestro caballo en la carrera. (hacíamos una apuesta de la carrera en el trabajo) con gran expectación respecto a lo que estaba ocurriendo.
Mi caballo caía muchas veces cuando saltaba las primeras cercas. Nos divertíamos mucho viendo la carrera.
The Grand National es el recorrido de la pista de carreras de caballos en Aintree, cerca de Liverpool en el Reino Unido. Es una de las mas famosas carreras de caballos que tiene lugar todos los años en Inglaterra. La primera carrera fue realizada en 1839.
El circuito es de casi 2 millas y uno cuarto de largo (unos 3,6km). Tiene diecíseis cercas en total. Varios de las cercas tienen nombre propio, por ejemplo, el “Bechars Brook” es la cerca numero seis, la cerca numero quince se llama “The Chair “ – la silla y “St Valentines Brook” que es cerca numero nueve.
En la carrera se corre dos circuitos en el que se saltan 30 cercas en total, dos de las cercas son solamente saltadas una vez – en el primer circuito, que son la cerca de agua y la silla(the Water jump and the Chair), después de la última cerca de la carrera hay un largo trayecto de 494 yards (casí 452 metros), que muchas veces decide quien es el ganador, cuando los caballos y los jinetes que ya estan cansados luchan por llegar a la meta.
Puede haber hasta cuarenta caballos que corren en la carrera (históricamente en el pasado podia háber mas de 100 corriendo la carrera!) esto puede causar accidentes espectáculares cuando la carrera esta en curso, porque las cercas son tan altas y anchas que causan muchos accidentes equinos cuando los caballos saltan por encima de las cercas al mismo tiempo cuando uno cae puede provocar la caida de los otros. Ha habido muchos accidentes a lo largo de los años, caballos que mueren por accidente ó han teniendo que ser sacrificados porque están gravamente heridos, pero hoy en día hay muchas medidas de seguridad que previenen las muertes de los caballos.
El nombre del primer caballo que ganó la carrera era Lottery (Lotería). Redrum fue el caballo mas famoso de la carrera porque ganó trés veces en 1973, 1974 y1977. Exisite una estatua dedicada a su memoría en la pista de Aintree.
